Because of my history with the schools in Amherst, my personal relationships with educators and families, and my background in social work and public health, I am well positioned to provide a fresh perspective to the district. I know the challenges well, including the history of corruption and cronyism, the illogical hiring practices, and the budget crisis facing our schools.
I am committed to working with the district administration to fix the hiring practices while continuing the work of hiring diverse and talented staff. Our students deserve the most qualified teachers. Our paraeducators should be paid a living wage.
The student facing staff should be our highest priority - because our students MUST be our highest priority. Amherst should be a model for the state - nay, the country!!! in being intentionally anti-racist and actively inclusive in our decision-making, policies, and practices.
Meaningful collaboration is possible and such efforts have had proven benefits to students, curriculum, and educators. The APEA (union) is a critical ally as we work to create a vital, healthy, and inclusive school system.
